The Fred Couples Signature Course
Carved from a 490-acre site of dense
woodlands on the west side of Houston's city limits, The Fred
Couples Signature Golf Course at Royal Oaks Country Club is a
parkland style golf course featuring manicured turf and
landscaping set alongside elegant water features. Towering
stands of mature pines and oak trees frame its traditional
design features, among which are gentle slopes and a classic
bunkering style reminiscent of great courses created during
golf's golden age of design.
Officially unveiled on Labor Day 2000, the
7,007-yard, 72-par course features 18 holes of rolling
fairways, dramatic water features and multi-tiered greens. The
Fred Couples Signature Golf Course delivers a combination of
beauty and challenge to rival the world’s premier golfing
experiences.
Brian Curley, golf course architect with
Schmidt Curley Golf Course Architecture/Planning, and Fred
Couples, noted PGA Tour player and golf course design
consultant, approached the design with a very technical method
of creating movement on the existing flat terrain, the former
location of the old Andrau Airport.
With the basic framework of technical design
and infrastructure in place, the designers set out to create a
visually dramatic course featuring an overall look based
largely on turf and trees. This traditional style makes for a
very playable course for all levels of players, yet will, with
length, certainly challenge the better
golfer.

Couples' view on the design of the
course
"I love traditional courses. So, when
designing the course at Royal Oaks, we began with tradition,
but relied on the latest techniques. The results are simply
incredible. Stunning waterfalls, undulating greens, perfect
landscaping and a challenging yet playable design will make
every hole a pleasure for any level of golfer."
Couples played the course for the first time
in October, 2000
"Some of the shots look a lot like Augusta,
which makes me very excited. There are many
similarities." Fred Couples, Masters Champion and famed
Houston Golfer
"We moved about 1.5 million cubic yards
of dirt so the golf course would feel recessed in its own
valley, lower than the surrounding homes," Curley explains.
While this process could potentially create drainage problems,
great effort and expense went into constructing a sub-grade
system of storm pipes, sand capping and other methods to
assure optimum playing conditions year round.
Curley also notes that in the grand
tradition of world-class golfing, the entire course was sodded
and not "sprigged." "In keeping with the finest courses in the
world,we sodded over 120 acres of the course including tees,
greens, rough and fairways. This will allow our course to have
mature turf conditions, excellent draining and optimum playing
conditions. In addition, all the greens are sand-capped, which
provides excellent drainage and ensures that the course is
ready for play sooner after a hard rain."
Golf Course Superintendent Terry
Hutcherson, who is responsible for maintaining the golf
course, says approximately 2,200 trees were transplanted
on-site and 1,300 new, mature trees were planted along the
fairways. "Most of the trees were planted with a 90-inch tree
spade and 180 on-site trees were planted with a 14-foot spade.
There are only 2 tree spades of this size in the world,"
states Hutcherson.
Overseeing member instruction and clinics is
David Altemus, Jr., Head Golf Professional at Royal Oaks.
Members will be able to practice their swing on the
double-ended driving range, perfect their putting skills on
the practice green and improve short game techniques out of a
sand bunker and the rough. |
